Tricky question, because sometimes people can have a negative effect on you without meaning to or without the intention to stop you following your career. I certainly had occasions when I doubted if I was doing the right thing, but I always took my time to make decisions and ask advice of my friends, family and teachers. I found that the majority of people are positive and encouraging and I tried to listen to them more and eventually stopped asking the opinions of people who are negative.
I think everyone at some point will come across someone who doesn’t believe in them or their ability. I would say that you have to trust your ability and put in the hard work. Try not to get involved with gossip, be kind to classmates and colleagues.
I’m really lucky that my friends and family have always been supportive of me while I’ve followed my career. Inevitably, there are setbacks along the way, though. Whenever I’ve encountered someone who didn’t think I was up to the job, my friends and family have encouraged me to dig deep and “prove them wrong” by beating everyone’s expectations.
