In the future, our energy needs will be significantly higher than they are now (due to population growth etc.), so more electricity is needed and the more that can be obtained from cleaner energy sources, the better the chance of being able to reduce carbon emissions and slow climate change. Nuclear energy is particularly low in its carbon emissions as has been quoted as ’emitting among the lowest amount of CO2 per unit energy when considering total life-cycle emissions’. It seems that its widespread use, along with other renewable energy systems, is what is being suggested for the long term goals for energy production. The benefit of nuclear energy over some renewables is that it is large-scale (the average nuclear reactors provides the same energy as 2,000 wind turbines) and reliable as a continuous supply of energy. If we want to use more nuclear energy in the future, we need to start building reactors now, and hopefully nuclear energy in the future will also consist of nuclear fusion which is low-carbon and also won’t generate radioactive waste.
