The issue with gas is that even the smallest leak in a gas system can cause issues and you cant just patch it like a tier on a bike. Before a gas system goes live we stress test it at pressures much greater than what it will experience during operation to ensure that we get no leaks.

During my work at a department known as Active Gas and Health Systems (AGHS) I was given the opportunity to change the oil on a tritium pump, this simple task had a number of complications when the gas had leaked into the oil requiring me and my supervisor to seal off the work area and go in wearing protective suits with a clean air supply fed through a tube. we managed to suck up all the gas in the pump but found that the oil had absorbed the gas like how a fizzy drink has absorbed CO2 to get its fizz, the task was aborted but shows how tricky working with gas can be.

Another example was my time with the JET Safety Systems department where I learned that all basement areas need Carbon monoxide detectors as the gas can pool in low areas like an invisible liquid.
