• Question: Since renewable sources provide only a small percentage of our energy and that nuclear power is so expensive, what can we realistically do to get off fossil fuels as soon as possible to help prevent climate change?

This is a really thoughtful question. It is a really complex topic, with so many different aspects to consider.

Currently a lot of the fossil fuel industry is heavily supported by taxes, to be cost effective. An end fossil fuel subsidies would be a huge step. Obviously money is required for research, development and implementation to make the change from fossil fuels to renewable energy so a redirection of taxpayers money is required. Therefore, as a personal step I would recommend voting for candidates and parties who support renewable energy.

A lot of the energy produced by renewable energy has to be stored in the form of batteries, so this requires grid development and renovation. However, mining for resources such as lithium and cobalt has a negative impact on the environment and there are a lot of ethical questions that arise from this.

An obvious step is to scale back demand for fossil fuels. Today, the BBC revealed that airlines are overloading fuel on their flights to save as little as £10. This is obviously wasting resources and is very polluting, therefore we should speak out against such companies and boycott where possible.

We need technology cooperation between countries, and in addition we need support for developing countries. This is a worldwide issue that needs support from everywhere.

Talking about this issue and educating yourself is very important. When you’re old enough to vote then use that power of your vote for politicians who care about climate change and want to make a difference. Join in on protests to make your voice heard. Write to companies voicing your concern. So join committees and engage with people on this issue. The internet is a very useful tool for research and joining movements, so use it! Hope this helps.
