Not yet. I spend a couple of hours a week demonstrating physics experiments to 1st year university students. They can be really tough, and it’s nice when students ask you about your own research and university experience and it gives you a chance to encourage them to get through their first year, and help them consider what it might be like to continue on with post-graduate study/research as it’s not something I ever thought about as an undergraduate.

I don’t think I inspire anyone yet, but I would love to in future! While I was at school, I had two amazing physics teachers who showed me how exciting science can be, and inspired me to learn more about the universe.

If I could have that same effect on even just one person, I would be over the moon. That’s why I’m taking part in “I’m a Scientist” – hopefully, chatting about exciting science with all of us might encourage some of you to go into science when you leave school! 🙂

I hope to be an inspiration to people some day. I am the first member of my family to go to university and definitely the only scientist. I hope that I can show young school pupils that it is possible to achieve at the highest levels of education and you can be anything that you want to be, even if nobody in your family or at your school has done it before.

I need to work harder to do that first, and speaking to people in events like this is the first step in learning how to do that well.

Do my friends count? They’ve said I inspire them.

Well. I did some outreach in some schools to explain what medical physics was, and the children wrote letters to me. Some of said they were inspired to learn more about science. Definitely haven’t inspired people on a Brian Cox level.
